To use our previous analogy, if you’ve just waded into the sea that is internet marketing, you’ll find many others who have been swimming in it for years.
These are people who have been consistently successful in their campaigns and have been making hundreds of thousands every year. They’re far more experienced than you are, so how are you going to squeeze yourself into that field and start earning?
Well, first of all, you’ve got to find out who the prominent marketers are in the niche you’re stepping into. That shouldn’t be hard for you to find out if you’ve done some research.
Then you need to find out whatever you can about their strategy. Not so much because you want to emulate what they’re doing. That can work, but most of the time, you won’t be able to beat them at their own game.
No, you actually want to differentiate yourself from them – to find out what they’re not so good at, then use that to grow your campaigns. If someone’s good at doing one end of the spectrum really well, and no one is looking at the other end, then it’s time to seize your chance, because you’ll just have found a huge market to sell to.
Know Your Battleground
You need to know your playing field really well. In this instance, your overall playing field is the internet, and you have got to play by its rules.
If you’re going for organic traffic (free traffic by ranking high on search engines), you’ve got to know what makes a website tick: factors that allow your site to rank higher on search engines such as Google. You also need to know what practices search engines frown upon, such as building low quality backlinks, spamming keywords, etc.
If you’re intending to use social media traffic (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), you have to play by their rules as well.
